Testing of maritime energy supply systems

The institute researches and develops innovative solutions for decarbonization and emission reduction in shipping. In cooperation with the industry, these solutions are transferred into practice.

The institute is building a large-scale infrastructure to test and try out the new energy systems to be developed in a standardized laboratory environment as well as under real conditions on a research vessel.

For this purpose, the institute is divided into four departments. The first one researches systems based on fuels to be identified, their storage on board, conditioning for use in the appropriate converter.

The second one researches the further development of on-board systems for electricity, heat and cooling and their interaction with the systems of the first department.

The third department brings the developed and built systems of both departments on board a demonstrator to test the systems under real conditions and make them ready for certification.

The fourth department virtually replicates the maritime energy systems to investigate simulations under extreme conditions.

Your field of activity will include :

  • Conception and development of system configurations for the testing of maritime energy supply systems with the help of : performing literature research and its evaluation analysis and generation of demand and consumption scenarios for system dimensioning.
  • Integration into the design of the energy systems on the application objects developing and planning new research approaches in the field of maritime energy systems for the electric propulsion of ships determination of sensor technology, control elements and network structures for the supply, measurement and control of the necessary energy supply services in order to provide the chemically bound energy from alternative fuels for the supply of the test vehicle evaluation of research results with regard to the suitability of the goal and planning of the research procedure

  • evaluation of technical system components and their optimization after evaluation
  • design, integration and testing of suitable zero-emission systems consisting of fuel storage, bunkering, heat conduction and connection to the converter
  • suggest projects and plans for the acquisition of research projects
  • writing scientific documentation about the work
  • publication in professional journals
  • drafting and accompanying applications for property rights
  • completed scientific university studies (MSc) in physics, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding or comparable field of study
  • physical-technical knowledge of sensor technology, electrical engineering, network technology, ship operation technology or similar
  • handling of technical equipment and integration of measurement signals in maritime applications for measuring and evaluating energy flows
  • extensive English language skills
