In modern mobile phones, the quality of the antennas is limited by the available design size and form factor of the devices.
At the same time the phone manufacturers would like to maximally increase the output power capabilities to improve their network coverage in bad radio conditions.
The new mobile radio standards such as 5G define modulation types with higher peak-to-average-ratio (PAPR), which further increases the requirement for maximum transmission power on one side and requires a higher linearity signal handing on the receiver side.
At the same time, trend in the industry is the reduced supply voltage for a better overall efficiency of the transmitter and to minimize the charge consumption from the battery.
In addition to the demand for more output power and reduced supply voltage, a wide frequency range (600MHz ... 8GHz) has to be supported by the same design of the RF matching network.
Please note that these positions are being filled in cooperation with the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
In order to master these challenges in a modern transceivers, it requires a new system approach and design optimizations in circuit technology :
As part of this thesis, new solutions should be explored, on the system engineering level as well as in circuit design.
Consequently addressing the new upcoming challenges a receiver architecture with higher blocker robustness, high sensitivity, low EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) and low power consumption shall be developed.
The performance shall be proven in a silicon test chip using the most advanced process technology node.
