The research initiative Integrity of nuclear waste repository systems Cross-scale system understanding and analysis (iCROSS) funded by The Helmholtz Association and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will establish a multidisciplinary scientific entity with high international visibility providing a unique research platform to solve urgent questions related to the future safe disposal of radioactive waste.

It integrates the internationally renowned multidisciplinary research activities of FZJ, KIT and HZDR within the Helmholtz program NUSAFE on radio / geo / biochemistry with the expertise of GFZ and UFZ on earth system analysis, understanding and simulation.

UFZ activities within this joint initiative are focussed on model and scientific software development for the analysis of nuclear waste repository systems across scales.

To strengthen the existing expertise in modelling of thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupled processes in fractured porous media at the Department Environmental Informatics of the UFZ in order to establish a leading position in the field of coupled process simulations for applications in deep geological deposition, we offer the following vacancy at the earliest possible date :

Subject : Numerical Modelling of the Mechanical Integrity of Claystone Barriers under THM Coupled Conditions

Your tasks :

  • Adapting and developing models addressing the anisotropic behaviour of claystone under THM coupled conditions before and after the formation of damage zones and failure planes
  • Analysing pore space changes and the formation of joint faces in order to assess transport properties as well as reactive potential of excavation damaged zones at multiple spatial scales
  • Implementation of models and algorithms into the scientific open-source finite element software platform OpenGeoSys
  • Defining and executing numerical benchmark tests
  • Model parameterisation and validation based on lab and field scenarios taking into account various uncertainties
  • Your profile :

  • Scientific education (Diploma, Master or PhD degree) in the field of civil, mechanical or environmental engineering, applied mathematics, or computer science
  • Proven experience in performing computational analyses using finite element or similar numerical methods of relevance, as well as in their application to porous media mechanics in a multi-physics context
  • Documented expertise in continuum mechanics, fracture mechanics, applied mathematics, theoretical physics, geotechnical engineering or similar
  • Advanced programming skills in C / C++ are required
  • Strong self-motivation and team work capability in a scientific software development group, interest in multi-disciplinary research, and the ability to communicate with experimental project partners
  • Experience in publishing and presenting scientific results
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English
