We are looking for motivated candidates with interest in novel areas of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, specifically the theory of nonlinear elasticity of complex crystals.
We develop first-principles approaches describing the dynamics and mechanical properties of structured materials in strong external fields.
In the project, the effects of large deformations on the internal elastic and plastic stress fields in novel disordered crystals shall be studied, both numerically and analytically.
The position is part of a joint research initiative together with groups at the University of Tübingen and at the Technical University of Vienna which is supported by the German and Austrian Science Foundations.
The consortium combines expertise in theory and computer simulations aimed to derive the emergent laws of continuum mechanics from an atomistic starting point, thereby bridging many length and time scales.
The open project concerns the analytical development and numerical evaluation of a statistical mechanics theory capturing Nambu-
Goldstone modes in broken symmetry states far from thermal equilibrium. The influence of defect density fields shall be studied in detail because of their major importance for processing and application of disordered soft solids (e.
g. gels, liquid crystals, biological tissues). Besides performing theoretical development, the PhD candidate is expected to work together intensely with the partner groups, to exchange data and participate in their analysis, and to repeatedly spend periods of time at the partner universities.
The successful candidate will hold a Masters degree in physics or a related science, and have first experience with soft matter science and / or numerical methods in physics and excellent knowledge in statistical physics.
He / she should be highly motivated and is expected to participate in teaching undergraduate students to the usual extent.
