Ethical aspects of responsible security research

The protection of critical infrastructures is an essential basis for the prosperity and stability of states and societies.

The research groups of the department "Resilience of Maritime Socio-Technical Systems" approach this topic from different perspectives.

The "ELSA Research" group is concerned with factors such as the legal feasibility, social acceptance and ethical justifiability of new technologies.

Within the framework of independent research projects as well as in cooperation with ongoing projects of the Institute, the work of the ELSA group is intended to ensure that civil security research and technology development are conducted with a high degree of responsibility towards society.

In particular, research projects are implemented that aim to analyse the ethical, legal and social aspects of security research and security technology and to translate their current implications into transparent guidance for research and future users.

For this purpose, competences from the fields of law, humanities and social sciences are bundled in the group.

Your tasks within the scope of this position include in principle :

  • develop and establish a methodology for an ethical analysis and evaluation of technologies and processes that serve the protection of maritime infrastructures
  • anticipatory research into the societal impact of technology development and into possible foundations for ethically responsible market introductions of future technologies
  • research and analysis of the impact of hybrid threats on critical infrastructures
  • management of research and development projects, especially in the field of ethics
  • publication of research results in journals and at national and international conferences
  • if applicable, your own academic qualification within the framework of a doctorate
  • completed academic university studies (diploma or master's degree) in the humanities (philosophy (especially ethics), sociology or comparable)
  • experience in the humanities with regard to ethical, social, technical or ecological contexts
  • knowledge of technology use by authorities and organisations with security tasks ( drone use by fire brigades, AI use by police etc.)
  • experience in dealing with industry partners, non-governmental interest groups, committees and decision-makers in public administration, if possible also in joint projects
  • mediation skills in working with heterogeneous interest groups
  • excellent oral and written communication skills and fluent English
  • strong communication and cooperation skills, persuasiveness and ability to work in a team
  • willingness to acquire extended security clearance (Ü2) equivalent to "NATO / EU SECRET
  • completed doctorate in applied philosophy or similar desirable
  • knowledge in the natural sciences or life sciences ( computer science, biology, chemistry, neuroscience or similar) desirable
