We are seek ing a PhD stu dent to invest ig ate the trans form a tion of Fe-bear ing silic ate min er als into sec ond ary iron phases dur ing micro bial driven soil form a tion under dif fer ent cli matic regimes.
We will use the Chilean coastal range, one of the most dra matic cli mate and veget a tion gradi ents on Earth, as a nat ural labor at ory in which to study the abund ance and dis tri bu tion of iron min er al iz a tion at dif fer ent stages of soil form a tion, as well as labor at ory exper i ments to study weath er ing mech an isms in detail.
This work is part of the Earth shape pro ject (www.earthshape.net), a large, inter-dis cip lin ary con sor tium of micro bi o lo gists, geo chem ists, geo lo gists, eco lo gist and soil sci ent ists.
This pro ject will provide the can did ate many oppor tun it ies to be cre at ive and innov at ive, to work on a chal len ging and envir on ment ally rel ev ant topic within a large net work of inter na tional col lab or at ors, and to con duct field work in Chile.

Require ments :
suc cess fully com pleted uni versity degree in Geosciences, Min er alogy, Geo chem istry or related fields (Mas ter, Dip loma or equi val ent), ideally with exper i ences in solid state ana lyt ics (e.
g. XRD, XRF, XAS, SEM). Abil ity to work inde pend ently and in a team. Excel lent man age ment and com mu nic a tion skills.
Highly motiv ated for inter dis cip lin ary research. Good com puter and lan guage (Eng lish) skills. Exper i ence in field work would be bene fi cial.
